Overview
Bordeaux is a destination packed with variety - relaxation, luxury, great food and of course, wine.
The aromatic wines of the region are grown on the bords d'eaux (riverbanks) of the Garonne and Dordogne and are considered by many to be some of the best in the world. The wine-growing region stretches for about 1,000sq km around the city, and is divided into 57 appellations (unique production areas), with around 500 châteaux, or vineyards.
Typical Day Itinerary
Morning
- Breakfast in our very own winter garden
Late Morning
- A tour and wine-tasting at Château Lynch-Bages.
A marvellously elegant château situated in Pauillac that has been owned for three quarters of a century by the Lynch family. Since 1989, each year, famous contemporary artists have created a work for Lynch-Bages. Thus, Lynch-Bages have established a collection of works by Alechinski, Jean Le Gac, Titus Carmel, Sandro Chia, Arroyo, Donald Lipski, Jiri Kolar, Donald Sultan and this year, Jan Voss. A guided tour of the art collection is included as part of the scheduled programme.
Lunch
- Lunch at Café Lavinal in the village of Bages. A restaurant run by Hugo Naon offering traditional terroir cooking
The small village of Bages situated on top of a hill overlooking a lake, is a pure marvel that deserves a visit. Rarely frequented, only by those well-informed, this village has preserved its charm and the whole flavour of the small townships of the Roussillon.
Afternoon
- A wine-tasting and a guided tour of the prestigious Château Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande and its formidable glassware collection.
This estate has been devoted to culture ever since the 17th century. In the early 19th century, Sophie de Pichon Longueville, student of the painter Gérard, decorated the family home with fourteen admirable paintings. The chateau's Orangerie currently displays a collection of elegant antique glassware, some of which is over 3000 years old. There are wine glasses and goblets as well as Greek, Roman, and Syrian carafes. The Afghani and Chinese glasses have survived the years marvellously, despite their fragility.
Evening
- Dinner at the Pavillon des Boulevards in Bordeaux city-centre.
An elegant Bordelaise house with fine cuisine and a wine list to match. One of the best restaurants in the region.
