Transylvania
Now that Romania has joined the EU, Romanians are predicted to make their way to the West in droves. But with beautiful Gothic cities like Sibiu and Saxon villages that make up one of the last medieval landscapes in Europe, there is no reason to presume that the migratory traffic will be all one way.

Romania boasts one of the best wildlife-watching areas in Europe, and with more than 300 species of birds, polecats and wolves the mountainous area of Transylvania are no exception.

Transylvania, home of the vampire legends, is also home to the lovely 12th century city of Sibiu. The first city in Eastern Europe to be declared European City of Culture for 2007, Sibiu is the most important centre built by Transylvanian Saxons and has a marvellous blend of Gothic and Renaissance architecture.

While you are there why not see the Sibiu/Hermannstadt Philarmonic Orchestra, which performs weekly concerts of classical and modern symphonic music. Or maybe you would prefer to listen to an organ concert in the 16th century Evangelical Cathedral?

Just north of Sibiu, is Sighisoara, the last inhabited citadel of Eastern Europe. This 13th century citadel counts 36,000 people and visiting Sighisoara offers a rare glimpse at how people used to live during the Middle Ages in Eastern Europe, it is also the reputed birthplace of one Vlad Dracul!
